Congressman Swalwell on Supreme Court Decision to Strike Down Roe v. Wade

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade:

“Today’s ruling is a dangerous and deliberate attack on our most basic freedoms. This ruling overturns the nearly 50-year-old precedent of Roe v. Wade, undermining the constitutional right to privacy, and ripping away a woman’s right to make intimate and personal healthcare decisions. For the first time in our history, America’s daughters have less freedom than their mothers.

“In this perilous moment, Senate Republicans have shown us where they stand: with Republican state legislators across the country who are seizing on the opportunity to roll back the clock on reproductive rights and criminalize health care. This decision makes government-mandated pregnancies the law of our country. It’s a giant step back for women’s health and the freedom to make decisions about their bodies. And it will get worse. The legal rationale used today can be used by Radical Republicans to ban contraception and same sex marriage. This is truly a sad day for our Nation.

“We are frustrated, we are upset, and we are angry – but we are not helpless. The Senate must immediately take up legislation that we passed in the House to codify Roe into federal law.

“House Democrats won’t back down from this fight. Too much is at stake.”
