Pelosi Statement on Bicameral Passage of Legislation Imposing Further Severe Economic Punishments on Russia

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after the House and Senate passed legislation banning Russian energy products and suspending normal trade relations with Russia:

“Today, the Congress has completed strong, bipartisan and bicameral action to hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked, premeditated war against Ukraine.  By again passing legislation to ban the import of Russian oil and suspend normal trade relations with Russia, the House is sending to the President’s desk additional action to further isolate Russia and devastate its economy.

“Putin’s aggression and barbaric war crimes have horrified the world and demand a strong response.  Since the start, the United States Congress has taken action to support Ukraine, including securing $13.6 billion in assistance, and to punish Russia by choking off the Russian economy by revoking normal trade relations, banning energy imports, reviewing its access to WTO, and reauthorizing the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.  And yesterday, the House passed the Ukraine War Crimes Act to ensure that perpetrators can be brought to justice.

“America is unwavering in our commitment to the Ukrainian people, and the Congress will continue to hold Russia to account.”
