I wanted to take a moment to update you on a topic that has been at the forefront of many of our minds – our former neighbor, Trevor Reed.
A U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Trevor grew up in our community, spending many of his formative years as one of our neighbors; he graduated from Tehachapi High School. But since August of 2019, he has been unfairly held as a prisoner of the Russian judicial system, and has been used by Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation to make a political statement.
Since Trevor was first imprisoned, my colleagues and I in Congress have been fighting to secure his safe return, including introducing a bipartisan, bicameral resolution and bringing national attention to his situation.
McCarthy holds a press conference with U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul (TX-10), and Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) in March of 2021.
Our efforts are still ongoing. Prior to President Biden’s meeting with Putin last week, Members of the House and Senate sent a bipartisan, bicameral letter to the President and his administration urging strong, unwavering leadership on this matter. Though we do not know the full diplomatic contents of their meeting, one thing is clear:
President Biden must demand that Putin immediately release Trevor Reed.
Trevor’s parents – Paula and Joey – partake in a virtual press conference to bring awareness to Trevor’s imprisonment in March of 2021.
Trevor is a loving son, a friend to many, and most importantly, he is an American citizen who deserves to be supported by his government to the fullest extent of the law. As time has shown us, Putin is a bad actor who cannot be trusted. While in captivity, Trevor has been treated inhumanely by a cruel Russian judicial system, making his swift return all the more urgent.
But I, and my House Republican colleagues, are not discouraged. We will continue putting pressure on President Biden and his administration until Trevor is safely back on American soil and reunited with his loved ones.
Trevor must be freed.
