WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House voted to repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force. The war powers measure provided the president broad authority following the 9/11 terror attacks.
“For nearly two decades, the 2002 Iraq AUMF has been used to justify military action without Congressional approval. I’m pleased the House voted to repeal the 2002 AUMFtoday. As a veteran, I believe it’s time to re-establish Congress’s role in authorizing military engagement, and to ensure the American people have a say in the U.S.’s role in foreign conflicts.”
