San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in observance of Memorial Day:
“On Memorial Day, grateful Americans pay tribute to the fallen heroes who gave their last full measure of devotion to safeguard our cherished freedom and ensure the survival of our sacred democracy. For generations, courageous patriots have put their lives on the line to defend our nation, from the hills of the American countryside to the fields of Western Europe to the shores of the Pacific to the sands of the Middle East. Today, and every day, we are thankful for their service and draw strength from their sacrifice.
“During this difficult year, our men and women in uniform were once again called upon to protect our nation. As the pandemic spread in communities across the country, our National Guard bravely joined the frontlines to distribute food and water and administer tests and vaccines – and tragically, many made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our families safe. May it be a comfort to their families that their heroic efforts saved countless American lives and served as a vital beacon of hope during this crisis.
“We owe our veterans, their caregivers and our military families a country worthy of their sacrifice. That is why the House has taken a number of strong actions to improve veteran mental health care and expand access to VA care for women veterans in the last Congress, as well as provide affordable housing for veterans experiencing homelessness in the American Rescue Plan. To build on this progress, the Democratic Congress is working closely with the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure all veterans get the quality care and benefits they deserve, including expanding on our achievements from last Congress to support those who were exposed to dangerous toxins such as Agent Orange and burn pits while serving in the line of duty. On this solemn day of remembrance, let us honor our selfless servicemembers by renewing this vital pledge: that just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they come home.”
