LaMalfa: D.C. Statehood Bill is Blatant Power Grab by Democrats

Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 51, a bill to make the District of Columbia the 51st state.

Rep. LaMalfa said, “Washington D.C., at only 66 square miles in the proposed state, is only one eighteenth the size of Rhode Island and is comparable in population to the city of Fresno. It makes little sense that Democrats would prioritize D.C. statehood with all the other issues facing our country. Not only is making the district a state unconstitutional, but Democrats’ claim this is all about representation for D.C. residents is disingenuous because that issue could easily be solved via retrocession, as done in 1846 with Virginia, by ceding territory back to Maryland. Like most Democrat priorities during Speaker Pelosi’s reign, this issue is all about securing power, this time by adding two additional U.S. Senators. This unconstitutional scheme is a blatant power grab and I firmly oppose it.”
