REP LIEU’S BILL TO ADDRESS VETERAN FOOD INSECURITY SIGNED INTO LAW

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after his bill, the SAVE Act (Supporting At-risk Veterans in an Emergency Act), was signed into law as part of H.R.7105, the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020. Rep. Lieu’s legislation allows the West LA VA and other VA campuses across the country to provide veterans experiencing hardship access to food and other necessities during a public health emergency.

“In the middle of a destructive pandemic, we must take care of our veterans. They are our nation’s heroes, and should never go without access to basic necessities. We heard from our partners on the ground that — much to our dismay — the VA could not legally provide homeless veterans with certain types of aid. I’m pleased the VA, and particularly the West Los Angeles VA in our district, will now have the authority they need to protect the wellbeing of our former servicemembers who’ve sacrificed so much to protect us.”
