LaMalfa Opposes Federal Marijuana Legalization

(Washington, DC) — Congressman Doug LaMalfa issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 3884, the MORE Act, which would deschedule marijuana and fully legalize and commercialize a schedule 1 narcotic. This bill would also expunge convictions for numerous federal marijuana-related offenses, extend Small Business Administration loans to marijuana companies while other small businesses struggle, and establish a new 5% commercial cannabis tax to create a slush fund for grants to benefit individuals who have been convicted of federal drug crimes.

LaMalfa said: “Small businesses are closing every day. Americans are facing lockdowns and loss of jobs, yet Speaker Pelosi has refused to pass legislation to help them. Instead, she forced a vote on this bill that legalizes and props up the marijuana industry and gives tax dollars to convicted drug dealers. This is not only bad policy, it’s a slap in the face to struggling families across the country. Promoting more ways to get high and increase danger in the workplace is not the remedy for what our country faces in 2020 and forward. Democrats even defeated an amendment to the bill to shield employers’ ability to maintain a sober, drug-free workplace. Americans deserve better than a Speaker whose priorities are to bail out felons while ignoring struggling small businesses and families.”
