Contact: Speaker’s Press Office,

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is observed annually as a national day of service on the third Monday of January in honor of the civil rights leader’s birthday on January 15, 1929:

“On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our nation honors one of our greatest leaders and heroes, whose unwavering voice and powerful vision were rooted in his profound faith and moral courage.  His service and sacrifice transformed our nation, inspiring us all through his commitment to non-violence and his insistence on social and economic justice for every American.

“The spirit of Dr. King still resonates in the hearts of millions of people around the world who remain committed to his dream and continue to work for peace and justice.  Today, in this time of growing uncertainty and fear, Dr. King’s call to action remains as urgent as ever.  We must remain dedicated to Dr. King’s noble fight to advance equal rights, to safeguard the sacred right to vote, to ensure quality, affordable health care and to protect the dignity of our workers and their families.  By devoting ourselves to this mission, we can overcome the dangerous pull of apathy and lead our nation closer toward a more perfect union.

“Martin Luther King, Jr. Day offers all Americans a chance to reflect on his legacy and recommit to our responsibility to strengthen our democracy.  For House Democrats, Dr. King’s warning that ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’ continues to motivate our work to deliver progress For The People and build a brighter, more just and equal future for all Americans.”
