WASHINGTON – Rep. Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley) issued the following statement today in response to U.S. military action that resulted in the death of Qassem Soleimani:
“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military launched an airstrike that killed General Qassem Soleimani, a brutal terrorist responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American service members and thousands of civilians in Iraq, Syria, and across the Middle East. Soleimani ran Iran’s terrorist Quds Force for over a decade and orchestrated countless terror attacks, including the attack on the American Embassy in Baghdad earlier this week. He actively developed plans to attack American diplomats and service members throughout the region and was a key architect of the covert operations central to Iran’s strategy to destabilize its neighbors. This decisive defensive action sends a message that the United States will not tolerate terror or further Iranian aggression. The government of Iran is a leading sponsor of terrorism worldwide, and we must proceed cautiously while remaining resolute in protecting our country and defending freedom.”
A member of the House Natural Resources and Armed Services Committees, Congressman Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
